About the event

The gut is a living ecosystem that influences immunity, mood, hormones, and long-term health. Modern research now shows that the gut microbiome plays a central role in regulating inflammation, blood sugar, brain chemistry, and stress responses through complex biochemical and neurological pathways. At the same time, healing traditions around the world have long taught that digestion is the root of vitality, emotional balance, and spiritual well-being.

In this class, we will explore gut health through both contemporary microbiome science and the cultural and spiritual traditions that recognized its importance thousands of years ago. We will examine how gut microbes communicate with the immune system and brain, how microbial imbalances can contribute to chronic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction, and how diet and lifestyle shape this internal ecosystem. These concepts will be paired with perspectives from Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kampo, and Indigenous healing traditions, which view digestion as the foundation of energy, resilience, and connection to the natural world.

Participants will learn how ancient concepts such as digestive fire, dampness, and vital essence mirror modern understandings of microbial metabolism, gut barrier integrity, and immune regulation. We will also discuss how different cultural food practices (such as fermentation, herbal bitters, warming spices, fasting traditions, and seasonal eating) support digestive health and nervous system balance. The gut–brain connection will be explored from both a scientific and spiritual lens, including how digestion relates to emotional regulation, stress, and mental clarity.

This class is designed to support a deeper understanding of the gut as both a biological control center and a symbolic seat of intuition and vitality, offering an integrative framework for those interested in health, herbalism, nutrition, or holistic medicine.
