About the event

No experience necessary! This is a beginner hula class, which will cover basic hula steps and hand motions. Choreography will be taught in the auana (modern) style of dance. You will be taught  not only dance technique but also be immersed into the Hawaiian culture and language.

Ashley Chewning was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. She began her journey in hula and Tahitian dance while living on O’ahu, Hawai’i, where she fell in love with the different Polynesian cultures. She began her training in hula in 2013 and Tahitian in 2014 with Moments Unforgettable Dance Studio of Honolulu under the direction of Kumu (teacher) Crystale Lehua Cayaban. There she performed at many different venues around the island including the Hawai’i Pro Bowl, Waikiki and Ala Moana Center Stage. While on the island of O’ahu, Ashley also performed hula with the Ladies Hula Worship and Praise group with Mililani Baptist Church in Mililani, Hawai’i. Both locations helped to instill a deep sense of spiritual connection to God, through dance, which helped in finding her passion in performing.

Ashley has continued her training in hula under the direction of Kumu Hula Kau’i Dalire of Kaneohe, HI on the island of O’ahu.

Chewning has also made her mark in the realm of acting, from theatrical productions to television shows. She's shined in beloved productions like Annie and Thoroughly Modern Millie, and has even made her mark in the hit show Hawaii Five-0. Proving her diverse talent. She continues her training in acting at Hollywood Huntsville in Huntsville, Alabama where she is not only a student, but also a part time instructor.

Ashley hopes to bring the beauty and the story of the Hawaiian and Tahitian culture to our area, through dance, and invites you to be a part of the journey.
